Mission Bridge Suicide – Youth jumped to death off the Mission Bridge in British Columbia

The Mission RCMP have issued a heartfelt plea to the public, requesting that all posts, videos, and photos related to a recent incident involving a youth jumping off the Mission Bridge be taken down immediately. The incident occurred on June 13, and while the youth survived, the police emphasize the importance of respecting the individual’s privacy and the emotional well-being of their family and friends.

Shortly before 5 p.m. on June 13, videos and images depicting the youth in distress or mid-air during the jump circulated widely on social media platforms. The footage, though capturing a dramatic moment, has raised concerns about the potential re-traumatization of those involved and the broader community’s sensitivity to mental health issues.

According to police reports, the youth was successfully pulled into shore by Mission Search and Rescue personnel and was transported to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Fortunately, this incident did not result in tragedy, but it has sparked important discussions about mental health awareness and the need for preventative measures.

In their official statement, the Mission RCMP acknowledged the concern and compassion expressed by the community but emphasized that sharing such videos can have unintended negative effects. “Out of respect for the youth involved and their loved ones, we are asking everyone to delete any related content from social media immediately,” police wrote. They urged the public to prioritize compassion and discretion during this sensitive time.

This incident also shines a light on ongoing safety concerns regarding the Mission Bridge itself. In 2023, the City of Mission discussed the possibility of installing suicide prevention barriers on the 33-metre-high structure. Currently, the bridge lacks any measures to prevent such tragedies, and mental health advocates continue to call for immediate action to enhance safety.

The RCMP’s appeal underscores a broader need for community awareness, mental health support, and proactive safety measures. While social media can be a powerful tool for awareness, it must be used responsibly, especially in situations involving vulnerable individuals.

As the community processes this incident, authorities and residents alike are reminded of the importance of compassion, discretion, and the ongoing efforts to prevent similar tragedies in the future. Respecting the privacy of those involved and promoting mental health resources can make a meaningful difference in fostering a safer, more caring community.

The Mission Bridge is a steel and concrete girder bridge across the Fraser River in the Fraser Valley region of southwestern British Columbia, Canada.
